Recently renovated, the Monte Vardia has an attractive position high up on Crete's westernmost prefecture, a location with historical significance for the area. On the western side of the Aktrotiri Peninsula, the establishment is embraced by many pretty beaches and intriguing landscapes. Spend a day visiting the unique caves and rock formations, plus the monasteries and churches. East of Chania city centre, you have a quiet location, but a short drive will bring you to the hub of the action. Chania town has retained much of its traditional charm and character, but you will not struggle to find pleasant places to eat, drink and relax. Near the village of Pazinos, for example, is the monastery of Saint John the Merciful, a characteristic example of western monasteries and 16th century architecture. Enjoy the beautiful peninsula beaches such as those of Kalathas, Tarsana, Stavros and Marathi, where one can find the ruins of Ancient Minoa. Profiti Ilias (500m) - North east of the Monte Vardia is this historical church where revolutionary Cretans gathered in 1897 to demand union with Greece. Here also are the graves of Eleftherios Venizelos (1864 – 1935), a prominent figure in the history of modern Greece and his son’s Sofoklis, who too was an important politician. Bear Cave (Arkoudospilia) (5km) - See this impressive natural rock formation of a bear.
